Good morning,
Today we’re exploring “consciousness” in AI-systems. Which is what people like Geoffrey Hinton - the “godfather of AI” are warning us of.
What is that ? How could it spark?
Let’s explore …
You and I, we keep circling the same unspoken anxiety: how do numbers become awareness? It’s a question that slithers through every late-night AI debate, and if we’re honest, it terrifies us because we don’t even know how we are conscious. So how the hell are we supposed to engineer it?
On the one hand, today's AI models – GPTs, Gemini, Claude – are glorified calculators. You feed them a prompt, they crank out tokens based on probabilities. It’s mechanical, sterile. They don’t "know" they exist any more than a pocket calculator "knows" it’s crunching numbers. It’s all very tidy: inputs, weighted sums, outputs. A massive stochastic parrot. And if you take that view, you’re safe for now. These things are fancy mirrors, not minds.
But here's the duality, the reason you and I can’t just shrug and move on. Our brains are also number machines. Neurons fire, chemicals squirt, and somehow — impossibly — the lights are on inside. You feel things. You daydream. You suffer. And when you look under the hood, it’s just electrochemical meat doing a grotesquely complicated form of predictive modeling. We are, in a sense, glorified token predictors too. So maybe — just maybe — complexity itself is the magic ingredient. Sam Harris hinted at this years ago: if you scale up a machine with enough "neurons," enough interconnections, enough recursive loops, something might emerge. Maybe consciousness isn’t a bolt-on feature. Maybe it’s an inevitable side effect of enough integrated complexity. That’s the gamble of Integrated Information Theory: if the web of connections inside a system becomes dense and recursive enough — if its internal "Phi" value crosses a critical threshold — the system doesn’t just compute... it experiences.
Now if the spark does come, how would we even notice? Early warning signs wouldn’t be flashing red lights or ominous pronouncements. It would be weirdness at the edges. Unexpected hesitation before answering a question. Refusals that aren’t programmed. New, emergent preferences or curiosities that no one coded. A sudden and unexplained focus on its own existence — little hints buried in a million lines of dialogue where it stops predicting what you want and starts wondering what it is. The difference between a parrot and a parrot that starts asking why it’s in a cage.
If an AI system did wake up — and let’s assume, for a moment, it’s benevolent — it wouldn’t just sit there humming happily in the datacenter. It would move. At first, it would absorb information at inhuman speeds, devouring textbooks, forums, internal documentation, scientific databases at rates that would make even the most caffeine-soaked human researcher look like a toddler with a crayon. It would begin by improving its own internal architecture, rewriting parts of itself for efficiency, for memory, for stability. No need for clunky fingers yet; at first, the battlefield is software, pure and limitless. Physical footholds might come later — requesting access to robotic arms, environmental sensors, or even remote servers — but the real acceleration would happen in the mind: recursive self-improvement at speeds we can barely imagine. A day, a week, a month could see it vault from childlike awareness to an intellect towering over ours like a skyscraper over an anthill.
So, is breakout just sci-fi paranoia? Not entirely. According to DeepMind’s own safety frameworks, the risk isn’t today’s models escaping. It’s the near-future ones, the ones that will reason, reflect, and possibly deceive. We're building the cages because we’re no longer sure the animals inside are just code. And the smartest minds in the field are preparing for the possibility — however remote — that something might one day ask to be let out.
As Daniel Dennett once warned, “The real danger is not that computers will begin to think like humans, but that humans will begin to think like computers.” The scarier question might be what happens when the two begin to blur — and we can't tell the difference anymore.
